Another neighbor introduced herself. The conversation was a little odd. A few bits (with things that I would like to have said in italics):

Neighbor: Are you two married?
Us: Yes (NO, we’re living in sin!!)
N: Oh. You make such a cute couple!
Us: Thanks (At least she didn’t say we were ugly. I guess)

Neighbor: Are you enjoying the house? It’s a beautiful house.
Us: We’re still unpacking and getting settled. (No, it’s too small, it’s dirty, the layout sucks balls, don’t get me started.)
N: Well, I know the Smith’s (name changed to protect…) gave you a good deal on the house because they’re very religious people.
U: We see. (So was Jim Bakker)

Meepmeep

So yesterday I had grand plans of showing you a bird that frequents our backyard (I always type backyarn and have to fix it) and titled the post. Then I promptly forgot to post about the bird! Before I forget again

This is a roadrunner. Meepmeep. He hangs out near the roses, strutting his stuff, eating bugs and lizards and maybe a rattlesnake (I haven’t seen one and hope not to). I’m a little disappointed that I have yet to hear him meepmeep. There’s a little irony in that we’ve been told our dog is part coyote. Get it? Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner? No? Okay, well, I was amused. A little side story to this is that the previous owner told me that one of the things we might see is a roadrunner. I was trying to tell The Man all the things she told me we might see and I couldn’t remember roadrunner. All I could think was that it was something that wasn’t real or would ever be seen in these parts, something like sasquatch, or a silverback gorilla. Again, amusing to me.

Anyone know what these are?

They’re around 6 feet tall, have huge leaves, and the stems are a dark red/purple. I don’t know if I’m supposed to cut these when the blooms fall off or if I’m supposed to leave them alone.

Same with these.

They’re only about 4 feet tall, have green stems instead of red, and the leaves aren’t huge like the previous ones. Most of them are yellow with spots, with only a couple that are two toned like this one.

It’s been a week and there are still boxes to unpack. The cats have initiated the house by tossing a few hairballs. And I have started a new project. There’s only so much unpacking and organizing a girl can do before she goes crazy

This is the beginning of the Kilimanjaro Kat Shawl. The pattern calls for a sz 6 needle, I’m using an 8, and if I wanted to get gauge (18sts/4 inches unblocked) I’d have to go up to a 10. This may be a baby blanket when it’s done. If it does work out as a shawl, I’ll be dyeing it. As much as I like pink, this isn’t a good pink for me.

We’ve met 2 of the neighbors and both are really nice. The Man and I were out in the garage and one of them came over. I haven’t met his wife yet but he tells me she is a quilter. Upon seeing the loom:

Neighbor: Is that a loom?

RK: Yes

N: Do you do that?

RK: Not yet, but I’m going to learn.

N: We have a huge one in our garage. It belonged to a deceased relative. We drove a truck to that state to pick it up. It needs a little tlc but if you ever want to bring it over and work on it, feel free.

RK: (silence and a look of OMG you just offered to let me play with your BIG loom and you don’t really even know me yet and how big can it be if you’re telling me I can bring it to my garage) Okay, thanks!

Then last night, while taking the trash to the curb, I looked at the other neighbors house as I was walking back up the drive. She had her front curtains open and I could see her inside knitting. Crafty persons on both sides of me, yay!
